What is Talc Powder?

Talc is a natural hydrated magnesium silicate known for its softness, lamellar structure and chemical stability.

Talc is a natural mineral with the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. It forms in metamorphic rock and is the softest mineral on the Mohs scale (1).

Pure talc is colorless and odorless, while natural talc may contain varying amounts of minerals and elements such as quartz, carbonates, iron and other impurities. The mineral composition depends on the deposit and affects the color, purity and suitability of each grade.

Its layered structure and naturally slippery surface give talc excellent lubricity and make it useful as a filler, lubricant, anti-caking agent and processing aid across various industrial talc applications.

High-purity talc

It has bright color, high softness and a very high level of purity, and is asbestos-free. That is what suits it to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Key Characteristics

Six properties define how talc behaves in your process.

Extremely soft

Mohs hardness of 1, with a smooth, slippery, greasy feel.

Absorbs moisture and oil

Acts as a drying, anti-caking and anti-adhesive agent.

Bright and white

High brightness that does not change the color of the material.

Chemically inert

Neutral pH and non-toxic. Insoluble in water and weak acids.

Heat resistant

Melts at about 1500 °C, so it holds up in demanding processes.

Electrical insulation

Low electrical conductivity for insulating parts.

Why Talc Powder?

A functional filler that improves your product while lowering what it costs to make.

Lower material cost

Replaces part of costly resin in plastics and pricier ingredients in paint, without compromising final quality.

Stronger, longer-lasting parts

Plate-like particles add strength, heat resistance and dimensional stability, and extend the life of finished products.

Smooth, consistent finish

Improves pigment dispersion, matting and texture in coatings, and smoothness and printability in paper.

Safe for sensitive products

The asbestos-free white grade suits cosmetics, personal care and pharmaceuticals.

Applications of Talc Powder

Where it is used, and the job it does in each industry.

Plastics and polymers

Filler in PP, PE, PVC, nylon and polyester. Adds stiffness, heat resistance and dimensional stability.

Paints and coatings

Improves pigment dispersion, matting and moisture resistance. Replaces part of costlier ingredients.

Cosmetics and personal care

Powder base for face, body and baby powders. Gives a soft, matte finish.

Pharmaceuticals

Lubricant and carrier in tablets and capsules. Requires the high-purity grade.

Paper and cardboard

Improves softness, opacity, whiteness and printability.

Tiles and ceramics

Lowers firing temperature and raises strength. Supplies MgO in glazes.

Soap-making

Filler and binder for smooth, uniform bars, at 5% to 40% of the formulation.

Agriculture and feed

Carrier and anti-caking agent for pesticides, fertilizers and feed supplements.

Talc in plastics and polymers

Talc is one of the most widely used mineral fillers in the polymer industry. It works with PP, PE, PVC, nylon and polyester.

Why it is used

Its plate-like structure and chemical stability integrate well with polymer matrices.

What makes it suitable

It improves mechanical strength, heat resistance, dimensional stability and durability.

Function it performs

Filler that reduces the amount of expensive resin needed, lowering cost and lengthening product life.

Who uses it

Makers of automotive parts, home appliances and electrical equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can’t find your answer? Contact our team and we will help you choose the right grade.

What is talc powder used for?

It is a filler and functional additive in plastics and polymers, paints and coatings, tiles and ceramics, paper, soap, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture and feed. Its softness, moisture and grease absorption, and anti-caking behavior make it useful in all of them.

Which industries use talc?

Plastics (PP, PE, PVC, nylon, polyester) for automotive parts, home appliances and electrical equipment; paint; ceramic tile; paper; soap; cosmetics; pharmaceuticals; agriculture and livestock; and foundry work such as coating molds.

What particle sizes are available?

Fine, uniform talc is available at 400 to 800 mesh. Tell us your application and our team will advise which range suits it.

What is the purity of talc?

Talc is the purest talc type, with bright color and high softness, and it is asbestos-free. Food and pharmaceutical talc must also be free of iron oxide, dolomite and carbon. Ask for the analysis for your grade.

What is the difference between industrial and food and pharmaceutical talc?

Industrial talc is chosen for function and cost in manufacturing. Food and pharmaceutical talc is purified far more strictly and controlled for contamination, so it costs more.
